Weeky Newsletter 12/13/10Q

**NOTES TO PARENTS**

We are having an art day on Thursday, December 16th. If you have done your fingerprints and would like to come in and help that would be great. We will start at 9:00 with our 3rd grade art projects then after lunch we will create our Reading Buddies gifts and another fun project for the students to take home. If you would like to volunteer please let me know via email. Misty_fite@yahoo.com. I am in still in need of volunteers.

Our Christmas program is Wednesday, December 15th at Grace Chapel. We will perform Alvin and the Chipmunks. We will be working on our program a lot this week.

I will complete my CBM testing today. If you would like to discuss your child’s assessment please feel free to contact me.

** WHAT WE ARE LEARNING**

Monday and Tuesday we will be reviewing. Wednesday is our Holiday program, Thursday is Art Day, and Friday is our Holiday party.

Friday, December 17th is report card day. This is a half day with NO after school and NO lunch. This is the start of our Christmas break. Class will resume on Monday, January 3rd. We will be having a holiday party in our classroom on this date. Please feel free to send in goodies for the class. I will provide the cups, plates, and silverware. If your child would like to bring in a movie we will choose which movie to watch out of which ones are brought in. Please make sure the movies are PG or G.

Our character winner for November (Responsibility) was Mireya. She had lunch with the principal this past Friday. Our monthly character ticket winner was Sabrina. She watched a movie and had popcorn this past Friday.

**NOTES TO PARENTS**

In writing and language arts, we will learn about verbs and organizing paragraphs.

In Science, we will learn about volcanoes and earth movements.

In Social Studies, the class will learn about American character.

Weekly Newsletter 11/29/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
I hope everyone had a wonderful safe Thanksgiving break. We only have three weeks of school until our Christmas break.

Our Christmas program is right around the corner, Wednesday, December 15th at Grace Chapel. We will perform Alvin and the Chipmunks.

3rd grade is the first year students encounter AIMS. We will be working daily on different skills to prepare them for the test.

Starting this week students are going to create their own multiplication flash cards. If you child has not brought in flashcards please bring them in as soon as possible.

Friday, December 3rd is Pancakes with the Principal. Pancakes are 50cents each.

December 1st is Duds for Dollars. (Dress down for a dollar). Please remember no spaghetti straps or violence.

Weekly Newsletter 11/15/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
Our Heritage Feast will be on Wednesday, November 17th. Food needs to be here by 9:30am and we will start to eat at 10:00 am.

Everyone will be receiving a progress today. If you do not receive your child’s please contact me and I can email it to you.

I will be placing the order for the Stuart Little books on Wednesday, November 17th.

No school on Wednesday, November 24th thru Friday, November 26th.

Starting this week I will be emailing the newsletter home on a weekly basis. It seems students are not getting them home.

We will be having a Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, November 23rd. I need volunteers to cook and donate turkeys. Please let me know if you can volunteer!!!! There will be no charge for lunch on Tuesday. If each family could donate $1 then I could buy the turkeys.

**NOTES TO PARENTS**

Stuart Little is a wonderful story I would like to read to the students and do fun activities with them. Here is a summary of the book. A mouse goes cross-country to seek his fortune and find a lost friend, falling into adventure after adventure along the way. His cheerful ingenuity always saves him from danger. From outwitting a cat to surviving an afternoon of substitute teaching, Stuart always knows just what to do. One of White's three classic animal stories, Stuart has captivated generations of children. Normally each book is $5.99. Currently through Scholastic, I can purchase these books for $1 each. I would appreciate anyone who could donate any sum of money to help pay for a class set of these books. I will be placing the order on November 15th so please send any donation in as soon as possible. Thank you!!!

Friday is our annual Harvest Fest. It is from 6:00-8:00 pm at our Central Campus. Students may wear costumes to the Harvest Fest but NOT during the school day!!!! **NOTES TO PARENTS**
Friday, October 29th is our annual Harvest Fest. We are in need of candy for the booths for prizes. The class that has the most candy donated will win a party of their choice. Ms. O’Hare and I are going to be working together with a Nerf target practice booth. I need parent volunteers to help run the booth. All booths will accept these tickets. Tickets are on sale now 5 tickets for $1 until October 27th. The night of the event tickets will be 4 tickets for a $1.00.

Today starts off our Just Say No To Drugs Week. We will be discussing different topics relating to just saying no and many fun activities throughout the week. Make sure to ask your child what they learned about just saying no to drugs.

On Friday, October 29th our class will have a Harvest Party. Students may bring in goodies to share with the class. We do have 27 students and 1 teacher.

In Math, we will be studying whole numbers along with telling time in five-minute intervals, identifying place value to hundreds, adding two-digit numbers using mental computation, and naming line segments.

In Science, we will learn about inventions and technology.

In Social Studies, the class will learn about U.S. geography/world geography.

Weekly Newsletter 10/18/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
This quarter, spelling work will be done as homework. I will give the students a practice spelling test on Monday morning before they see the spelling words. Attached to the newsletter is a spelling tic tac toe board. Students will choose one activity to do each evening. They must turn in an activity Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning. On Thursday evening they are to take a practice spelling test and bring it to me on Friday morning. We will have a normal spelling test on Friday.

I was very pleased with the report cards that went out last week. We had 4 students on Principal Honor Roll (all A’s) and 2 students on Honor Roll (All A’s and 1 B). The same students that were on both honor rolls were the same students who had perfect attendance.

In Social Studies, the class will learn about U.S. geography.

40th DAY

October 7th is our 40 day of school. It is very important that your child is at school and on time this day. It is one of our funding days. The state pays us based on who is in attendance and on time. This will be a PJ day for the class. Students may bring in a stuffed animal as long as it fits inside their backpacks. They may NOT wear slippers. Tennis shoes only!!!! I will not assign homework on this day.

**NOTES TO PARENTS**

October 7th is our 40 day of school. It is very important that your child is at school and on time this day. It is one of our funding days. The state pays us based on who is in attendance and on time. This will be a PJ day for the class. Students may bring in a stuffed animal as long as it fits inside their backpacks. They may NOT wear slippers. Tennis shoes only!!!! I will not assign homework on this day. No spelling test this week.

There will be a Grandparents Day on Wednesday, October 13th. Grandparents will start out in the cafeteria at 9:00. In the cafeteria they will sign-in, get information and have a little snack. Grandparents will come to the classrooms around 10:00 and participate in a fun activity with the class. At 11:00 it will be time for the students to receive their report cards so grandparents will be asked to leave or wait for their grandchildren in the cafeteria.

Attached to the newsletter is a project we are going to be doing when the grandparents are here. Please read over it and send the supplies to school as soon as possible. We will do this project on Wednesday, October 13th.

Wednesday, October 6th is Duds for Dollars or Dress Down Day for a $1.00. If you do not want to participate you must wear a uniform.

In Math, we will be we will be working on adding multiples of 10 using mental computation, adding 3 and 4, using guess and check to solve a problem, and solving a problem by acting it out.

Our Flat Stanley project went out in the mail on Friday of last week. The students are very excited about it. We are interested to see where Flat Stanley will go.

Our first movie night of the year will be on Friday, October 1st. WE will be showing Toy Story 3.

There will be a fund raiser at Boston Market on September 24th at two of their locations. Grant & Tanque Verde and 22nd & Kolb.

** WHAT WE ARE LEARNING**

In Phonics, we will concentrate on vowel-consonant-e.

In Math, we will be learning about reading a thermometer to the nearest 10 degrees, rounding numbers to the nearest ten, writing addition and subtraction facts families, and naming and drawing polygons.

In writing and language arts, we will review and take our first test on sentence structure

In Science, we will be conducting our first experiment and learn about building a universe.

In Social Studies, the class will learn about A New Nation.

Weekly Newsletter 9/7/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
Thank you to those that attended our Open House. It was a huge success.

Our character trait for September is trustworthiness. The students will vote on who they think has been the most trustworthy during the month. This student will have lunch with the principal.

If you have a fingerprint clearance card and would be willing to go on a field trip with our class please contact me as soon as possible. I would love to have a few field trips this year but need parents/grandparents, aunts/uncles with fingerprint clearance cards.

In Math, we will be adding 10 to a two-digit number and subtracting 10 from a two-digit number using mental computation, writing the date using digits, and dividing squares into two, four, and eight equal parts.

In writing and language arts, we will continue our work on sentence structure.

In Science, we will be learning about tools of science and building a universe.

In Social Studies, the class will learn about American Independence.

Open House 9/1/10

Don't forget that Wednesday (9/1) is our Open House from 6:00-8:00. There will be two informative presentations at 6:30 and 7:15. I will be in my room most of the evening.

Weekly Newsletter 8/30/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
On Wednesday, Sept 1st is Dress Down Day. The cost is $1.00. Students may wear anything except flip-flops, spaghetti straps, muscle shirts, or anything with violence on it. If you do not want your child to participate in Dress Down Day you child may wear normal uniforms. Your child must pay a $1 if they dress down or they will be sent to the office to call for a change of clothing.

Open House will be on Wednesday, Sept. 1st from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. At the Open House you may preorder yearbooks for this school year. The Book Fair will also be open.

Due to so many students not turning in homework last week, effective immediately any student that does not turn in their homework will be sent to after school detention. After school detention is from 3:30 to 4:30. They must serve the detention on the day their homework is not turned in.

Homework!!!!

Parents,

I had a large problem with students not turning homework this week. So effective Monday students will serve after school detention the day they do not turn in their homework. Detention is from 3:30 to 4:30. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Weekly Newsletter 8/23/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**

My grading marks mean the following: Check plus means the student got full credit for the assignment usually 3 points. Check and ½ means they received 2.5 points. A check means they received 2 points and a check minus means they received 1 point and must redo part of the assignment. 3 points is the most points that can be earned on an assignment that is graded with check marks.

If you bring in a snack for the class it must be store bought. I appreciate any snacks you bring in for the class.

Open House will be on Wednesday, Sept. 1st from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. At the Open House you may preorder yearbooks for this school year. The Book Fair will also be open.

Students will also be required to read 15 minutes each night (Monday thru Thursday). They will keep a reading log that is due on Friday of each week.

We will start learning our multiplication tables soon. I am asking that every child bring in 2-100 packs of white index cards so the children can make their own flashcards. This will help them learn them by writing them and then actually using them to practice in the classroom.

Weekly Newsletter 8/16/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
Also please make sure your child has a school planner. This will be used all year to keep up with homework and also as a communication tool between home and school. Parents need to sign homework planners nightly.

During our reading time this year I will pull groups of students (usually 6 to 7 students) for 15 to 20 minute blocks of time. I will work with each group at their reading level. The other students will work at their tables. This week in Reading I will assess the students to determine which reading groups they will be placed in.

Students will also be required to read 15 minutes each night (Monday thru Thursday). They will keep a reading log that is due on Friday of each week.

Weekly Newsletter 8/12/10

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer vacation. I am looking forward to a wonderful 2010-2011 school year.
Please make sure your child remembers our dress code: red, white or navy collared shirts with khaki or navy blue bottom.
I encourage every student to bring a water bottle to keep at their desk since it is still very hot during the day. We will be having P.E. twice a week (Monday and Thursday) right after lunch. The students may take their water bottles with them to P.E.
We do have breakfast for your child at 8:30. Our lunch is at 12:05. I encourage you to pack a snack for your child to have at mid-morning break. Lunch can be bought at school or you may pack a lunch for your child. There is not a refrigerator or microwave for student use. Please plan accordingly.

Weekly Newsletter 5/17/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
We are down to the last 2 weeks of school. This is our last week of homework. Please continue to make sure your child is doing and turning in his or her homework. Our last day of school will be Friday, May 28th. We will continue to learn new concepts this week. The last week of school we will be reviewing.

If your child will not be here the last day of school please send a note in with them so I can make sure they receive their report card on their last day.

We will have an end of the year party on the last day of school. Students maybe bring in a snack and a movie for the class.

Friday, May 21st PJ Day. Since my class did such a wonderful job for my sub last Thursday I have decided to give them an Eeggee’s and PJ Party.

Thank you to everyone that donated oranges and water for Field Day. The students had a great time.

This week our will be testing the students. This is our last standardize testing for the year.
There is nothing for them to study.

Our class will be competing against the other 3rd grade classes and the 4th grade in an Olympics on April 28th. We will teach the students about how the government works. They will create money, a country name, and other interesting things about the country. The students may wear a green shirt with jeans or jean shorts. If they are not wearing a green shirt they must be in uniform.

Our Book Fair will be the week of May 3rd through May 7th. It will be buy one book get one free. This is also teacher appreciation week.

Wednesday, May 12th is Field Day. More information will be in later newsletters.

Our last day of school will be Friday, May 28th. We are down to 5 full weeks of school left. Please make sure you child is getting their homework done this last couple of weeks. We will continue to learn new concepts the rest of the school year.

Weekly Newsletter 4/19/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
I want to thank all the parents and students for last week. AIMS testing went very well. The students worked very hard.

Progress Reports will be going out on Wednesday. If your child does not receive a report card then he/she is passing all subjects.

This week our school will compete in Penny Wars. Boys vs Girls. Whoever brings in the most pennies wins a free dress down day. If the students bring in pennies it goes toward them if they bring in silver change it goes against the opposite sex.

Our class will be competing against the other 3rd grade classes and the 4th grade in an Olympics on April 28th. We will teach the students about how the government works. They will create money, a country name, and other interesting things about the country.

Weekly Newsletter 4/12/10

NO HOMEWORK THIS WEEK OR SPELLING WORDS!!!

Due to AIMS testing this week we will not be learning Math, English, Phonics, or Reading. We will focus on reviewing when not testing. Monday we will not be testing but other grades will be. I will also try to go over some stuff in Science and Social Studies. This is a very important week for the students. It is important they get plenty of rest and a good breakfast. We will provide an extra snack in the morning for those that are testing. It is very important that your child is on time this week. If you child is not on time they will sit in the office until our test is finished testing.

In Science, we will continue to learn about rocks and minerals.

In Social Studies, we will learn how a government works.

Weekly Newsletter 2/15/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
Thank you to everyone for the wonderful Valentine’s gifts! I love everything!

This week is Love of Reading Week. Monday teachers will go to other classrooms to read. Tuesday is PJ day. Wednesday we will make bookmarks. Thursday each student will come up with their own poem. Friday is dress as your favorite book character. Students need to know the name of the book and the character’s name. There will be a number of guest readers in the classroom this week as well.

Thursday, February 18th is Skate Night at Skate Country from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Please make sure your child is reading nightly. Reading logs are due Friday morning.

Wednesday, February 24th is Grandparents Day. Please invite your child’s grandparents to join us for many fun activities. Lunch will also be served. If your child’s grandparent will join us please fill out the form that was sent home last week. I will have a fun activity for the students and grandparents to do together.

There will be NO school on Thursday, February 25th and Friday, February 26th for Rodeo Break.

Weekly Newsletter 2/8/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
Love of Reading week has been moved to February 15th through 19th. If anyone would like to volunteer to read to the class please let me know by Friday. We will have a couple of guest readers in our room this week as well.

We will have a class Valentine’s party on Friday, February 12th from 2:00-3:00. If you would like to send in a snack for the class you are more than welcome. I would like to keep the sweets to a minimum. Chips, veggie tray, or Chex Mix are a couple of examples of things I would like to have for the kids. Also I am attaching a list of all the kid’s names for Valentine Cards.

Our character trait for February is Caring. January’s character lunch winner was Danielle Ortiz. Good job Danielle.

In Math, we will be identifying ordinal position, selecting coins for a given amount, multiplying two-digit numbers, and identifying the number of days in each month.

In writing and language arts, we will start our unit on the mechanics of capitalization and punctuation.

Weekly Newsletter 1/25/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**

This Wednesday is our 100th Day of school. This is a VERY important funding day for our school. It is important that your child is at school and on time that day. We will have special activities and a free cook out for lunch that day. This is also a free dress down day for the students.

February 5th is Mid-quarter. If your child has a 75% or lower in any subject you will receive a progress report. Otherwise you will not receive a progress report.

Love of Reading week is the week of February 8th through the 12th. If anyone would like to volunteer to read to the class please let me know by Friday. We will have a couple of guest readers in our room this week as well.

Thank you to all the parents that sent in supplies for the classroom. We are still in need of pencils and crayons.

There will be NO homework on Wednesday.

Weekly Newsletter 1/19/10

**NOTES TO PARENTS**

We are in need of a few supplies for to get us through the rest of the school year. If you can help us out with any supplies it would be greatly appreciated. We are in need of pencils and crayons. Our remaining supplies will get us through the rest of the year.

Weekly Newsletter 1/4/10

I hope everyone had a nice relaxing holiday break. I want to thank all the students for making the first semester great. Thank you to all the parents and students for my wonderful Christmas presents. I loved them all.

I hope all the students as well as parents are ready for a very busy and productive second semester.

Everyday the students will take a sample mini-test of a couple of concepts that might be on the AIMS test. I want them to be as familiar with the format as possible.
We will also be working very hard on multiplication. Please work with your student at home on the facts.

Students will be writing a lot this semester. We are working on a project in conjunction with the other 3rd grade classes.

** WHAT WE ARE LEARNING**

In Phonics, we will review the vcv syllable division, accent, and schwa.

In Math, we will be learning how to square numbers, identifying perfect squares, showing three and four-digit numbers using base ten blocks, subtracting facts, following a recipe, and setting a dial and determining elapsed time.

In writing and language arts, we will review adverbs and adjectives.

In Science, we will continue to learn about life cycles of animals and plants.

In Social Studies, we will continue to learn about Rome.

Please remember to sign the paper that came home with your child’s report card. It is important that I get it back to know if you would like a conference.
