Weekly Newsletter 11/16/09

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
Skate Night at Skate Country on Tuesday, November 17th from 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

La Paloma will be having a Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, November 24th. Each 3rd grade is asked to provide 2 fully cooked turkeys for the feast. If you can donate money, turkeys, or the time to cook the turkeys please let me know.

There will be NO school Wednesday, November 25th through Friday, November 27th.

We will be starting multiplication the end of this week. After Thanksgiving break multiplication will be a major focus in our math lessons. If your child did not bring in index cards please send these in as soon as possible.

Please remember our Heritage Feast is on Wednesday. Please have food here by 10:45. We will eat at 11:00. If your dish includes apples or nuts please label.

Students will start to work on AIMS test prep starting after Thanksgiving break. 3rd grade is the first year students encounter AIMS. We will be working daily on different skills to prepare them for the test.

** WHAT WE ARE LEARNING**
In Phonics, we will learn about dictionary coding.

In Math, we will be working on constructing a number line, adding two-digit numbers using addition algorithm, using estimation to verify the reasonableness of calculated results, drawing and measuring line segments to the nearest half inch, and multiplication facts (7).

In writing and language arts, we will be finishing our unit on verbs and taking our assessment.

In Science, we will continue to learn about life cycles of animals and plants.

In Social Studies, each student will present their heritage box project to the class.

Monday: Write each word 3 times
Tuesday: write words 1-15 in sentences.
Wednesday: write words 1-15 in ABC order
Thursday: Study
Friday: Test

Heritage Feast Date Change

Due to unforseen circumstances, the Heritage Feast has been changed to Wednesday, November 18, 2009. It will begin at 11:00 a.m. Please have all food items to the classroom by 10:45 a.m. We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience.

Weekly Newsletter 11/2/09

**NOTES TO PARENTS**
Thank you to all the parents that brought in candy and hot dogs for the Harvest Fest. Also thank you to all the parents that sent in goodies for our Harvest Party. The kids had a great time.
There will be no school on Wednesday, November 11th in observance of Veteran’s Day.
La Paloma will be having a Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, November 24th. More information will come soon. We will also be out of school for Thanksgiving Break from Wednesday, November 25 through Friday, November 27th.

Please remember Heritage Boxes are due on Friday, November 13th. Please let me know if you need anything for your child’s box. This is a significant grade for this quarter.

The class will be making scarecrows this week. They will be on display in the room until Thanksgiving break. Students may take them home the week of Thanksgiving.

** WHAT WE ARE LEARNING**
In Phonics, we will learn about the vowel y.
In Math, we will be working on naming line segments, identifying a missing digit in an addition problem, multiplying by 1 and by 10, ordering containers by capacity, and reading a thermometer to the nearest degree Fahrenheit.
In writing and language arts, we are learning about verbs and the editing process.
In Science, we will continue to learn about life cycles of animals and plants.
In Social Studies, the class will continue to learn about majestic peaks and deserts.
